Gainesville, Ga - The Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team concluded their recruiting effort for the upcoming season with the addition of Point Guard Anastasia Minaeva (Moscow, Russia).  Minaeva brings a wealth of experience to the Tigers, having started her playing days at eight years of age for the Basketball Sports School.

She has played on a number of successful teams, highlighted by a Regional Championship at age 15.  She also played on an age group team that competed in the European Championships in 2005 and placed 9th.  Minaeva was named Most Valuable Player at age 14 and her team won the Moscow City Championships on eight different occasions.

At the Russian National Championships, her team won the Gold Medal in the 12-13 age group and was runners up another year.  "We are delighted to welcome Anastasia to our team and look forward to the contributions she will make.  She is a gifted player with a great understanding of the game and will fit very well into our up-tempo style of play." said Head Coach Gary Bays.

Anastasia is the daughter of Roman Borisov and Natalia Minaeva.

Gainesville, Ga - Freshman Defender Hannah Norwood (Collins Hill HS) has been selected as the Jimmy Johns Golden Tiger of the Week for her performance in the Thomas soccer game last Friday.  The coaching staff at Brenau University voted on the award, which is the first of the 2010-11 academic year.

Norwood was playing in her first college soccer game and proved herself to be one of the most consistent performers on the field.  She handled all the corner kicks for the Tigers and established herself with her intelligent play.  She is one in a group of freshman players that played very well in the 2-0 loss to Thomas.

"Hannah had a great game in our season opener - playing solid defense for us as well as getting involved in the attack.  She really stepped up and one wouldn't have known that this was her first college game based on her performance and contribution to the overall effort," said Head Coach Mike Lochstampfor.

Fort Worth, Tx - The Wesleyan Hughes Classic Volleyball Tournament concluded on Saturday with two matches for the Golden Tigers, first against Texas-Brownsville who swept them by scores of 25-8, 25-8, 25-16 and a great match with Southwestern Assembly of God that went the distance before the Tigers succumbed 20-25, 29-27, 25-18, 22-25, 7-15.

In the first outing, Melissa Thornton had six kills to lead in that category and Mekenna Cipres and Kerry Abernathy collected six assists apiece.  Meredith Hardin had six blocks and Natalie Beth Hayes came up with five.

The Tigers offense came alive against Southwestern with Thornton leading the way with 13 kills.  Alexis Arthur (10), Courtney Frady (10), Hays (9) and  Meredith Hardin (7)  were also active at the net.  Sophomore Setter Mekenna Cipres had 22 assists and her counterpart Kerry Abernathy had 17. Libero Danelle Russell had 26 digs.

Even though the team was unable to win over the two day event, Coach Meredith Franklin was encouraged by the progress made, saying  "We were exposed to some teams and skills tht we are not accustomed to seeing in our conference.  We have grown smarter and stronger as a team.  The only thing now we need to do is learn how to finish it.  In most of the matches we went neck and neck with the teams, and just let off at the end."

The Tigers will continue tournament play next weekend with a two day event at Francis Marion University in South Carolina.

Gainesville, Ga - The Brenau soccer team opened their season last night at the Allen Creek Soccer Complex and came out on the short end of an evenly played match with Thomas, Ga by the score of 2-0.  The Tigers actually outplayed the visitors from Thomasville for a good portion of the match, but just couldn't get the ball into the back of the net.

The first goal came off a penalty kick on a call that could have gone either way and the second score happened on a defensive mistake that led to a scramble in the penalty box and the ball rolled into the net.  Shots on goal were even and the home team actually hit the post or crossbar on three different occasions in addition to missing a penalty kick of their own.

Senior Dolapo Obahor had an outstanding night and recorded several great shots that just wouldn't go in the net.  Freshmen Hannah Norwood and Janay Hunt were consistent on defense and Kirsty Smith, who is nursing a pre-season quad injury, played the entire match and served up several nice passes.

Coach Lochstampfor said, "The overall effort was good, but we made one defensive mistake that resulted in one goal and the penalty kick came as a result of a tough call."  It was an evenly played match and I thought our freshmen played very consistently."

The Golden Tigers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 3 at 11:00 am when they face off against Mobile, AL at the AUM Capital City Classic in Montgomery, AL.

Fort Worth, TX - The Brenau University volleyball team opened their 2010 season with three matches in the Wesleyan Hughes Classic. The Tigers are coming off a record-breaking season in which they won 24 matches.  Sophomore Melissa Thornton had an outstanding day with 25 kills and 37 digs.

In the opening match of the day, Loyola of New Orleans won in three straight, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-17.  Junior Alexis Arthur had 10 digs and seven kills and Thornton backed her up with nine digs and five kills.  Kerry Abernathy had 12 assists and Danelle Russell chipped in with 13 digs.

Mid-America Christian won a tightly contested match 25-18, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-21 in Brenau's second match of the day.  Arthur had eights kills, seven digs and four blocks; Thornton came up with 11 kills and 14 digs; Senior Courtney Frady had seven kills and four blocks; Kelsey Aley had five kills, three digs and eight blocks and Meredith Hardin came up with eight blocks.  Abernathy had 18 assists and Mekenna Cipres had 10 assists and seven digs.

In the nightcap, host Texas Wesleyan swept the Tigers 25-21, 25-23 and 25-21 in another close match.  Arthur and Thornton again led the offense with 10 and nine kills respectively.  They also came up with 10 and 11 digs.  Libero Russell had 18 digs and Aley had nine blocks.  Setters Abernathy and Cipres had 17 and 10 assists.

"Within the past day we have grown dramatically as a team.  At the beginning of the day we were making too many mental mistakes, while waiting for someone else to take the ball or kill.  However, at the end of the day I was delighted to see how scrappy our defense was and how the hitters were placing their hits with power.  We just need to be consistent with our efforts,"  said Head Coach Meredith Franklin.

The Tigers will continue play today with matches against Texas-Brownsville and Southwestern Assemblies.
