Cloud computing promises to provide considerable benefits for colleges and universities, including increased reliability and flexibility, with lower or more transparent costs. At the same time, cloud computing complicates or exacerbates a range of security concerns due to the loss of control that it involves. Cloud security involves the same fundamental issues as any computer security program, but these questions take on new facets and considerations when data and services are stored off-campus. Explore this issue more in the latest issue of the EDUCAUSE 7 Things series.

Brenau University UPDATE

"RV 586 >Atlanta author Joseph E. Dabney, who used to live and work in Gainesville as managing editor of The Times, returned to the Brenau campus on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. to celebrate the publication of his newest book, The Food, Folklore and Art of Lowcountry Cooking. The reception will be in Wilkes Board Room, spilling out onto the veranda. This is Dabney´s second "cookbook." The first, Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, and Scuppernong Wine, won the James Beard Cookbook of the Year award in 1999 and has subsequently gone through 18 printings, not counting the 2008 special edition. The special treat here is that the university´s caterers are whipping up some recipes from the book to serve at the reception, including Palmetto-style Hush Puppies and one with a special Brenau connection, Sonny Seiler''s Savannah Marinated Shrimp. The event is open to faculty, staff, students and the public at no charge. But you do need to let us know if your coming - just so we´ll know how many shrimp to fix. Call 770-718-5307 or e-mail lchavanne@brenau.edu to confirm attendance. The campus bookstore will have copies of the book for sale and Dabney will be signing. You can read all about it and Dabney in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution article at http://www.accessatlanta.com/atlanta-restaurants-food/fork-lorist-joseph-dabneys-599323.html.

Oh, and that "Brenau connection" to Seiler, the Savanna lawyer known for raising the "Uga" English Bulldog mascots at the University of Georgia: His daughters Bess Thompson of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Sara Story of Athens are Golden Tigers, both Brenau alums.
"

"RV 582 >Fall semester 2010 is underway with four particularly outstanding new students in the Women''s College. Known as "Brenau scholars", they are participating in the honors as well as the leadership program right from their freshman year.

Even on a full scholarship, that''s a tall order but they feel comfortable about it. " Since the first time I stepped on campus, it has felt like home at Brenau. Everyone is just so welcoming and excited about being here," says Jessica Anderson, whose home town is Dahlonega.
"I am in the pre-physician assistant program, because it''s my dream to become a medical professional. I just love everything about Brenau from the beautiful campus to the excellent education we get."

The academic offerings were also the deciding factor for Megan Pinter to come here from Buford, Georgia. "I'm planning to become an early childhood teacher, so I'm enrolled in that program in the College of Education," she says, "working with children is my passion."

Not everybody can call Brenau their first love, though. Rachel Siegfried, a native of Gainesville, was "head over heels for another college" when she received her invitation to the scholarship competition. One weekend on campus changed her mind.

"Growing up so close to Brenau, I never gave it a second thought until I was invited to participate in the Brenau Scholar Competition. In the young women I met that weekend I found the reflection of who I wanted to be four years down the road: confident, light and kind. I knew then that Brenau was the girl next door that had been right for me all along," says Siegfried. She now majors in studio art and applies the experience she brings to the table from her previous work with wedding and event designs.

Even though all these career goals are large, Lauren Cain has the real "biggie": she is majoring in biology to work towards a veterinary school, specializing in large animals. "Horses, cows, big ones like that," she says. "The biology program and its faculty seemed ideal to me for that purpose."

Dr. Jay Gaspar, director of the honors program, is delighted about the new crop of Brenau scholars. "One of them, I think it was Rachel, emphasized how much she agreed with the Brenau Ideal of ''being rather than seeming''. These students are so open-minded and enthusiastic that I''m confident about the leadership roles they''re sure to take after graduation - or even before that time. The Brenau scholars of 2010, and the ones that follow in their footsteps, are the people who will help make the Brenau 2025 vision become reality.""

"RV 580 >Brenau English Professor Winter Elliott adds a new credential to her already impressive resume of expertise in classical and medieval literature – high school football analyst. The Times newspaper in Gainesville sought out “experts” to comment on tonight’s matchup between the North Hall Trojans and the Jefferson Dragons. The newspaper posed the hypothetical question: what if personifications of each team’s namesake were to meet on the field of battle. Although Elliott claims no great knowledge of the gridiron, dragons are all over the place in medieval literature; and she’s has participated in some national programs related to integrating into other academic disciplines, like business, detailed study of the works of Homer, the Greek epic poet whose dramatis personae included a heck of a lot of Trojans. With those bonafides established, Elliott concluded that Trojans were pretty good at defense but were susceptible to sucker punches from trick plays, especially red-hot “aerial attacks” that are stock-in-trade of fire-beating dragons. Her bottom line? “I’m going with the Dragons,” she said confidently. “The Trojans are going to get barbecued.” No peer review of her thesis will be necessary. Just check tomorrow’s box scores.
