1. Residential students are allowed to use HUBS and SWITCHES as a means to share internet access within dorm rooms. We are aware that some rooms only have one Internet connection and these devices are required in order to share Internet access to 2 or more persons.
2. Residential students are NOT allowed to use ROUTERS or WIRELESS ACCESS POINTS in student residences. These devices can interfere with the wired and wireless systems already in place and can actually cause the entire network to be disrupted if configured improperly. If it is determined that you are using one of these devices - the Internet access in your room may be disabled in order to return the network to normal function. Turning off the port is the only way we can restore the network to proper function. We do our best to warn the RA's when a port has been disabled so that they can find the student and alert them of the situation. However, we do not have a mapping for ports to rooms at this time so it can be little tricky to know the exact room affected. Not installing these devices in the first place is the best course of action.
3. Do not share your Rapidconnect login and password with other users. Your Rapidconnect login and password are the same as your email so unless you want other people reading through your mail - you need to keep your credentials a secret.
4. Be sure your computer has up-to-date Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs installed. The IT department has posted free programs on the RapidConnect login page for protection from Viruses and Spyware (eTrust and Microsoft Defender). Be sure to uninstall any previous Anti-Virus programs before installing the eTrust Anti-Virus program. Running two anti-virus programs will cause your machine to be very slow.
5. Use of any file sharing software/devices that shares transmits or receives copyrighted materials. (i.e. Limewire, eDonkey, Kazaa, iMesh, Gnutella...) is strictly prohibited. Programs such as iTunes or other legal means of copyrighted material distributed are allowed.
