Summer Camp Assistant Leader

Under the supervision of the Program Director, Camp Director, and Site Coordinator, in cooperation with other staff, and consistent with the YMCA mission, the Camp Assistant Leader is responsible for in achieving the goals of day camp through implementing activities which provide guidance, leadership, values, education and enjoyment for the children served by camp in conjunction with and in the absence of the Site Coordinator. The Camp Assistant Leader is responsible for the safety and well-being of children and staffs in his/her care. The Assistant Site Coordinator is responsible for the supervision and discipline of the counselors and campers, parent communication, and other duties as assigned at his/her site, in the absence of the Site Director. Know How:§         Be able to provide sound, caring, and positive leadership to campers and staff.§         Provide, to everyone, extraordinary customer service.§         Be able to implement safety standards in all activities.§         Be able to implement planned activities with other staff making all activities fun and exciting for all campers.§         Have a good understanding of the mission and values of the YMCA and be able to demonstrate and teach from those values.§         Pass a criminal background and Pre-hire drug test.§         Offer positive reinforcement and proper behavior techniques to children.§         Attend mandatory CPR and First Aid training.§         Must be at least 19 years of age.§         Ability to motivate a high quality staff is critical. Physical Requirements: Ability to traverse a wide variety of terrain including fields, forest trails and rock formations in such a way as to be able to assure safety and supervision of children. Ability to climb, walk, run, stoop, squat or kneel. Ability to carry equipment to appropriate destinations or affect the carrying of such equipment. Ability to use senses which enable safe supervision including seeing and/or hearing.  Principal Activities:1.      Promote YMCA values: caring, honest, respect, and responsibility.2.      Administrative include, but are not limited to: parent communication, discipline, supervision of staff at his/her site, prompt decision making, and supervision of site in conjunction with and in the absence of the Site Director.3.      Make certain that staff is following their schedule.4.      Act as a positive role model while providing consistency in leadership and guidance.5.      Stimulate creative growth and development.6.      Build a strong relationship with campers and parents.7.      Responsible for safety of campers at all times including enforcement of camp rules and regulations.8.      Arrive at camp on time to start shift and complete shift before leaving.9.      Camp Assistant Leader must always open or close the site.10.  Keep proper records as required. 11.  Show consistent support towards staff members.12.  Build and maintain enthusiasm in all groups.13.  Check overall attendance each morning and report attendance to Camp Director.14.  Ensure lesson plans are being followed as an integral part of daily program, make changes as needed.15.  Report all program changes and equipment needed to Camp Director.16.  Maintain all equipment used for program in good working order.17.  Attend and participate in all staff trainings and meetings.18.  The Camp Assistant Leader is responsible for an age group unless they are acting as the Site Coordinator.19.  Report to the Site Coordinator and Camp Director any difficult or unusual situations.20.  Share problems with the Program Director Camp Director, and Site Coordinator so they can be solved.21.  Work closely with Site Coordinator, keeping one another informed of any issues that may arise at the site.22.  Facilitate proper group (counselors and campers) behavior at all times.23.  Other duties as assigned24.  Adhere to Metro Atlanta YMCA policies and procedures. End Result:A safe, quality day camp programs that meet the YMCA goals and objectives of providing campers with a positive growth experience.
