(GAINESVILLE, Ga.) On Saturdays from 2-3 p.m., Sable Bing said she “has fun” and can brighten people’s day with the music she plays on her radio show, “Make Room for Soul.”
According to Bing, this radio show is a profanity-free rhythm and blues segment with various singers including Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Chris Brown and Musiq Soulchild.
Before Bing began hosting her show, she had to learn the process of being a disc jockey. Bing described how she “learned how to use the equipment in the studio, how to record public service announcements and how to produce/ host a radio show in radio practicum.”
After she studied radio, Bing was ready to host her own show. She started by prerecording each show in January 2007 and then started going live in July 2007. She said, “I absolutely love my radio show and building it from the ground up will be my fondest memory at Brenau.”
Bing comes from Decatur, Ga. and is an alumna of Southwest DeKalb High School. Brenau had a mass communication department, which has given Bing the opportunity to “gain character and leadership skills” at a women’s college.
Bing believes there are “many options in the communications field” and she is interested in studying mass communication or psychology in graduate school. She likes several media in communication including journalism, radio, and film. Although Bing has chosen a major, she finds it hard to decide in which medium to specialize. She said, “I believe once I begin an internship, I [will] be able to decide what I really want.”
You don’t have to be a mass communication major to have a radio show. Students in other majors are encouraged to see Professor Scott Fugate if they are interested in radio.
