Office of Assessment
About Us Critical Thinking Project

The Assessment Office has a long history at Brenau University, having been created in 1989, initially to coordinate assessment of our General Education Program. Subsequently, the focus was expanded to include all major academic programs of the University, in Gainesville and our extension sites. Academic administrative support units also participate in our university-wide assessment, data analysis and reporting process.

The Assessment Office is dedicated to supporting Brenau University’s commitment to educational excellence. It is our mission to assist the institution in demonstrating the quality and effectiveness of its programs and services in support of the institutional purpose, by means of a broad based and institutionally supported system of evaluation, documentation and use of results for improvement.

On this website you can learn more about the goals of the Assessment Office, including information on our annual Women’s College Assessment Day, the Fall Assessment Feedback Forum, and the faculty Assessment Committee. You can find forms for completing end of year assessment reports as well as the archived completed Assessment Plans and Reports for every division. There are also rubrics for evaluating speaking, writing and critical thinking. And periodically we will post survey or other institution-wide assessment results.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dr. Patty Webster, Director of Assessment, or Ms. Erin McKinney, Research Associate. We are located in Room 209 of the Owens Student Center, telephone extension 4711.

Critical Thinking Rubrics

Brenau University through its Faculty Assessment Committee is exploring Washington State University's Critical Thinking Project for possible implementation here at BU.

What is Assessment

Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning. It involves making our expectations explicit and public; setting appropriate criteria and high standards for learning quality; systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards; and using the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance.
